He was granted Dutch citizenship later that year and changed the spellings of his names to Dutch. The engagement was approved by the States-General-a necessary step for Beatrix to remain in the line of succession to the throne-in 1965. Nonetheless, Queen Juliana gave the engagement her blessing after giving serious thought to canceling it. With memories of German oppression still very strong 20 years after the war, sections of the Dutch population were unhappy that Beatrix's fiancé was a German and former member of the Hitler Youth. They met again at the wedding-eve party of Princess Tatjana of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg and Moritz, Landgrave of Hesse, in the summer of 1964. Claus and Beatrix were also distantly related (5th cousins twice removed), as both being descendants from von dem Bussche family. Ĭlaus met Princess Beatrix for the first time on New Year's Eve 1962 in Bad Driburg at a dinner hosted by the Count von Oeynhausen-Sierstorpff, who was a distant relative of both of them. In the 1960s, he was transferred to Bonn. He then joined the German diplomatic corps and worked in Santo Domingo and Ivory Coast. After his repatriation, he finished school in Lüneburg and studied law in Hamburg. He was taken prisoner of war by the American forces at Meran before taking part in any fighting. In 1944, Claus was conscripted into the German Wehrmacht, becoming a soldier in the German 90th Panzergrenadier Division in Italy in March 1945. From 1938 until 1942, he attended the Baltenschule Misdroy. Ĭlaus was a member of such Nazi youth organisations as Deutsches Jungvolk and the Hitler Youth. From 1938, Claus and his six sisters grew up on their maternal grandparents' estate in Lower Saxony he attended the Friderico-Francisceum-Gymnasium in Bad Doberan from 1933 to 1936 and a boarding school in Tanganyika from 1936 to 1938. His mother belonged to the ancient von dem Bussche noble family which originated from the County of Ravensberg. His father, by birth a member of House of Amsberg which belonged to the untitled German nobility from Mecklenburg, operated a large farm in Tanganyika (formerly German East Africa) from 1928 until World War II. He was the second child and only son of Claus Felix von Amsberg and his wife, Baroness Gösta von dem Bussche-Haddenhausen. Klaus-Georg Wilhelm Otto Friedrich Gerd von Amsberg was born on his family's estate, Castle Dötzingen, Hitzacker, Germany, on 6 September 1926. Flashback: Official Visits to the Netherlands, 198.Prince Claus of the Netherlands, Jonkheer van Amsberg (born Klaus-Georg Wilhelm Otto Friedrich Gerd von Amsberg 6 September 1926 – 6 October 2002) was Prince consort of the Netherlands from 30 April 1980 until his death in 2002 as the husband of Queen Beatrix.State Visit from the UAE, Welcome Ceremony and Sta.Though we only saw two tiaras from Lilibet during the state visit, there were actually three tiara events. Queen Beatrix wore Queen Emma's Diamond Tiara, though if you click here (and then click "play clip") to see video from the banquet, you'll see it was quite out-sparkled by her diamond festoon necklace. Her tiara, the Cambridge Lover's Knot Tiara, was a lifetime loan. And the Princess of Wales once again borrowed a necklace from her mother-in-law, the Four Row Japanese Pearl Choker. The Queen Mother also opted for rubies, which are now in the Queen's collection: the Oriental Circlet and Queen Victoria's crown rubies. The Queen Mother, the Princess of Wales, and Queen Beatrix at the return banquet She wore the same orders as the first evening, and anchored her sash with the True Lover's Knot Brooch. The Queen went for rubies, wearing her Burmese Ruby Tiara, the Ruby Floret Earrings, the Ruby and Diamond Floral Bandeau Necklace, the County of Cornwall Bracelet, and a diamond evening watch. Queen Beatrix hosted a return banquet at Hampton Court Palace where even more glitter was on display. As for Queen Beatrix, she is wearing her impressive Württemberg Ornate Pearl Tiara. On her other shoulder, she wore the royal family orders of her father and grandfather on her wrists, a bracelet (it's hard to tell which one) and an evening watch.Ĭlick here for video of the state banquet, at which you can see other pieces of jewelry currently in the Queen's collection, including the Princess of Wales in the King Khalid Diamond Necklace, which she borrowed for the evening, and the Queen Mother in the Greville Tiara (currently on loan to the Duchess of Cornwall) and the necklace from Queen Alexandra's Wedding Parure. She wore the riband and star of the Order of the Netherlands Lion, with her sash anchored by the Kensington Bow Brooch. She wore the Grand Duchess Vladimir Tiara with pendant pearls along with the Duchess of Gloucester's Pendant Earrings and Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee Necklace. In the evening, the Queen hosted a state banquet at Buckingham Palace.

1, January 6, 1986Īnd the impact this had on audiences was clear. It’s kind of pathetic that this show is television’s baby steps.’’ When do you see people of this age in bed together? Eventually on this show, you will. People can be attractive, energetic, have romances. When do you see passionate older people on television?” Susan Harris told The New York Times in a 1985 interview shortly after the show’s premiere. “Television is always several steps behind life. The very premise of The Golden Girls - four women navigating life after marriage and finding companionship in one another - is feminist in nature. What made their love lives particularly important was the fact that television shows rarely portray older women as sexual beings. So much so that the blog Refinery29 recently tallied how many men each character slept with (naturally, Blanche had the most at 165). Over the course of the series, we see the characters focus on career ambitions, new hobbies, and more often than not, their unapologetic enjoyment of sex. Further, we see the women enjoying life after marriage. While the women exchange quips and get into fights, the overarching message of the show focuses on the importance of chosen family, and women supporting other women. The following are just some of the reasons why, after 30 years, The Golden Girls is still the most progressive show on television. It is not surprising then that Harris brought this tradition to the writer’s room of The Golden Girls each week. Things that I knew that people went through that hadn’t been addressed on television.” Harris was no stranger to shows that incorporated political story lines, having previously worked on Norman Lear’s groundbreaking All in the Family, and having written the historic abortion episode for Maude, which won her the Humanitas Prize - an award for film and television writing that promotes human dignity, meaning, and freedom. In an interview with Out Magazine, show creator Susan Harris explained, “We liked to tackle - not outrageous issues - but important issues. And if you love this show, check out these other shows about mediums.Beyond the fact that the show is extremely well-written and well acted (thanks to Bea Arthur, Estelle Getty, Rue McClanahan, and Betty White), The Golden Girls also stands out for being one of the last sitcoms where progressive values were part of the show’s DNA. How to automatically mount a network drive on Mac OS Xīut first you have to download the setup file from App Store. What to do when your Mac displays a blank screen and the cursor after a macOS update.Apple releases macOS 10.13 High Sierra, and it is gloriously boring.Reverting the installer’s name back to Install Mac OS X Lion.app allows Lion DiskMaker to use it. Also, if you’ve renamed the Lion installer-for example, I added (10.7.3) to the name of mine to indicate that it installs OS X 10.7.3-Lion DiskMaker will claim that the renamed app can’t be used to make a Lion-install drive. For one, if you wait too long to choose an option in any of Lion DiskMaker’s dialogs, you’ll get an AppleScript time-out error, and you’ll have to start the process over. On the other hand, Lion DiskMaker does have a few glitches. And the aesthetes out there will appreciate that the mounted drive is called “OS X Lion Install” and its window looks like that of an official installer, complete with the large OS X logo. For example, Lion DiskMaker places the installer’s Utilities folder at the root level of your bootable drive or disc for easier access to those utilities. Lion DiskMaker works well, and, in fact, creates a nicer bootable drive than you get by performing the procedure manually. Once you’ve selected the installer app or disk image, Lion DiskMaker proceeds as described above. Otherwise, Lion DiskMaker will let you manually navigate to the Lion installer app or-if you previously extracted the InstallESD.dmg file (the disk image containing the Lion installer data) from the installer app-to the installer image. What if you don’t have a copy of the Lion installer in /Applications? If you previously moved the Install Mac OS X Lion app to a different folder or drive, Lion DiskMaker may be able to find the installer on its own if so, you see a dialog box indicating that location, and you just click Use This Copy. You can boot your Mac from the new drive by rebooting while holding down the Option key when you see the OS X Startup Manager (the screen showing all bootable drives), choose the one with the Lion-installer icon. The process took around five minutes for me using an external USB drive. Finally, Lion DiskMaker displays a message that your bootable drive is ready. Instead, you’ll see a file named Copy in progress, please wait… Once this file disappears, Lion DiskMaker performs a few other tweaks, such as giving the disk a Lion-installer-volume icon. A Finder window with a name similar to E429CB27–52A4–42C8–849E–2486E7C3841A will appear, gradually populated by the Lion installer and the system files required to make the drive bootable. (A beta version, 1.7b1, of Lion DiskMaker allows you to use a partition on a multi-volume drive without affecting the other partitions.)Ĭlick Erase Then Create The Disk to proceed. But that warning also notes that if you’ve chosen a partition of a drive, the process will also erase all other partitions on that drive, as Lion DiskMaker will repartition the drive into a single volume. After doing so, you also see a big, scary warning that this procedure will of course erase the contents of the chosen volume. Choose Create A Boot Disk, and you’re prompted to choose a volume: a USB thumb drive, an external hard drive, or a partition on another drive.
